Kufeld was born on March 25th, 1993 in Fremont, California to parents Bob and Melinda Kufeld. She was her class valedictorian and received honors from her school's science department.
In addition to Washington, Kufeld was recruited by both UCLA and Virginia. She elected to attended UW, stating "It is the complete package: soccer, school, people, and environment. I knew it is where I belonged after my visit."〔
